Why go
Walk from the civic heart of the Altstadt toward the Rhine, then compare it with the galleries and contemporary streets nearby. Düsseldorf's identity makes more sense through that short change of scene than through population rankings or trade-fair statistics, especially on a first visit.
The full story
Düsseldorf grew where the Düssel reaches the Rhine, and the river still gives the centre its orientation. The Altstadt holds the older civic landmarks, including Burgplatz and St. Lambertus, while the riverside promenade opens that dense street network to long views. Nearby, Königsallee's canal marks a different city: a formal shopping boulevard rather than a medieval street pattern. The city's role as a state capital and business centre is visible in its newer buildings, but its cultural reputation has equally deep roots. The Kunstakademie Düsseldorf is associated with artists such as Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter and Andreas Gursky. Kraftwerk adds a different, electronic chapter to that story. For a first day, follow one thread instead of trying to cover them all: pair the old town with the river, or use an art museum as the anchor for a wider centre walk.
