Why go
Ephesus is a long, sloping outdoor site rather than a compact cluster of ruins. Planning the arrival gate and onward pickup helps make the walk manageable, especially if you also intend to visit Selçuk or the hillside shrines. The two gates make a point-to-point route possible.
The full story
Selçuk is the practical base for reaching the ancient city. Regional arrivals may come through İzmir, while Kuşadası is another starting point for a visit. From Selçuk, the archaeological zone is a separate trip; walking or a local transfer may suit different schedules, but current services and fares need checking. Inside the site, the visit proceeds on foot along a slope between an upper entrance near the Magnesia Gate and a lower entrance near the Great Theatre. Starting high makes the main route downhill. Starting low is also possible, but it means climbing through the ruins or arranging your visit differently. The gates are far enough apart that a return to the same vehicle is a real planning choice. The Terrace Houses are a distinct part of the visit, so confirm current access if they are a priority.
Useful to know
- Arrange transport and pickup around the upper Magnesia gate and lower gate if you want a downhill route.
- Expect an extended walk on exposed archaeological paths; carry water and allow more time than a quick monument stop.
- Check current rail, bus and local transfer details before travel from İzmir or Kuşadası.
