Theatre Gymnasium
The partially exposed Theatre Gymnasium stood beside the Great Theatre and included a palaestra, or exercise area. Its remains show another use of the lower city beyond performances.
Stop beside the theatre to see how exercise and bathing facilities fitted into this busy district. The palaestra gives a concrete clue to the gymnasium’s function, while the neighboring theatre makes their different public roles easy to compare within a short stretch of the site.
What to look for
Part of the palaestra is exposed beside the Great Theatre.
The gymnasium formed part of a larger bath and exercise complex.
Useful to know
Observe from the signed route; access across the excavation is unverified.
Pair it with the Great Theatre to compare two adjacent public uses.
