12th-century Florence

Foreign trade and civic independence drove Florence's growth in the 12th century, despite repeated pressure from imperial and Tuscan rulers.

12th-century Florence

Why go

The 12th century set the conditions for the later commune. Florence prospered through long-distance trade, and this wealth supported a growing town of churches and palazzi. After Margravine Matilda died in 1115, the city resisted her successors; it reasserted its independence after Emperor Henry VI died in 1197. This tension between commerce and outside power runs through the city's medieval history.
