14th-century Florence

Florence combined banking, wool work and vernacular literature in a turbulent century marked by recession, labour revolt, political strain and plague.

14th-century Florence

Why go

The 14th century adds social and economic depth to Florence's cultural reputation. Major banking families such as the Bardi and Peruzzi operated across Europe, but recession brought failures in 1340. Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio wrote in Tuscan rather than Latin, helping establish the language's literary standing. The Ciompi revolt of 1378 also reveals tensions within the wool economy.
