16th-century Florence

The restored Medici transformed Florence from a contested republic into a duchy and then the capital of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

16th-century Florence

Why go

The decisive change came after a fragile republican period. Papal troops restored the Medici in 1512, and the anti-Medici republic returned briefly in 1527 before the siege of 1529–30. Alessandro de' Medici became duke in 1533, ending the republic; in 1569 his successor's new title as Grand Duke made Florence the capital of a larger Tuscan state.
