Cycling in Florence
Cycling can cover Florence's mostly level historic centre, but dense mixed traffic makes it better for confident riders than for relaxed sightseeing.
Why go
A bicycle can be useful when your plans extend beyond the compact centre or when you want to link several districts without relying on a car. Most of the historic centre is relatively flat, while the ground rises north and south of it. The trade-off is space: buses, cars, scooters, cyclists and pedestrians all share narrow, busy streets.
Useful to know
Treat central cycling as transport, not a slow sightseeing activity; traffic and pedestrians compete for limited space.
Use a bike for longer links across the flatter centre, then walk the most crowded historic streets.
Check current rental locations and conditions before relying on a bicycle for the day.
