Driving and parking in Florence

Driving is poorly suited to Florence's historic centre, where camera-enforced limited-traffic zones, narrow streets and resident parking restrictions complicate every arrival.

Driving and parking in Florence

Why go

This guidance can save a costly mistake if you are arriving by car. Florence's ZTL, or Limited Traffic Zone, restricts entry and uses cameras to enforce access. The centre also combines very narrow streets with one-way systems, while on-street parking is largely reserved for permitted residents. A car makes more sense for travel beyond the city than for sightseeing within it.

Useful to know

  • Plan parking outside the restricted historic centre before you drive into Florence.
  • Do not enter a ZTL unless you have confirmed that your vehicle is authorised.
  • For central sightseeing, leave the car parked and continue on foot or by public transport.
