Florence and the Renaissance

Renaissance Florence joined textile wealth, Medici patronage and unstable republican politics, with repeated expulsions culminating in the decisive 1529–30 siege.

Florence and the Renaissance

Why go

The Renaissance was not a calm artistic golden age. Wool workers rose in the Ciompi revolt in 1378, then Cosimo de' Medici built influence through patronage and banking. Lorenzo supported artists including Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo, but the Medici were expelled twice. The 1529–30 siege ended the republic and brought Alessandro de' Medici to power.
