Why go
These traditions reveal how Florence still uses its major public spaces for ritual and competition. Scoppio del Carro focuses on the Duomo precinct at Easter, while Calcio Storico centres on Piazza Santa Croce and teams representing four historic quarters. They offer a more civic, theatrical view of the city than a museum visit.
The full story
Scoppio del Carro takes place on Easter, when the Brindellone, a cart drawn by four white oxen, is brought to Piazza del Duomo between the Baptistery and Santa Maria del Fiore. A mechanism connects the cart to the church, and the ceremony culminates in fireworks. The celebration is associated with the First Crusade in local tradition. Calcio Storico Fiorentino is a different kind of historical performance: a physical team game with elements closer to rugby than modern football. Its best-known symbolic match was played on 17 February 1530, during the siege of Florence. Today four teams represent Santa Croce, Santo Spirito, San Giovanni and Santa Maria Novella, and matches are staged in a temporary arena in Piazza Santa Croce. Both events turn familiar landmarks into active civic settings.
Useful to know
