Inside the Florence Baptistery

A dim, marble-lined interior where granite columns, mosaic flooring and Renaissance tomb sculpture reward close looking after the bright cathedral square outside.

Inside the Florence Baptistery

Why go

Give your eyes time to adjust, then look down as well as up. Dark green and white marble create a geometric setting around the columns, while the pavement includes intricate patterns and a zodiac motif. The tomb of Antipope John XXIII, made by Donatello and Michelozzo, brings an early Renaissance monument into this much older building. The former font's base remains visible in the floor.

What to look for

  • Sardinian granite columns dividing the lower interior from the upper walkway.
  • The tomb of Antipope John XXIII by Donatello and Michelozzo.
  • The outline of the earlier octagonal baptismal font in the pavement.
