From the 10th century onward, Florence became an autonomous commune whose expanding trade, powerful guilds and recurring factional conflicts reshaped the medieval city.
The medieval story explains Florence's towers, churches and civic identity. After communal self-rule began in 1115, rivalry between Guelphs and Ghibellines repeatedly unsettled the city, and Dante was exiled amid later White and Black Guelph disputes. Meanwhile the gold florin, introduced in 1252, and banks with European branches made commerce central to Florence's power.
