Modern Florence

After Medici rule ended, Florence passed through Habsburg government, joined unified Italy and was briefly remade as the national capital.

Modern Florence

Why go

Modern Florence explains some of the centre's most conspicuous changes. Francis Stephen's accession in 1737 brought Tuscany into the Austrian crown, and Tuscany entered united Italy in 1861. Florence became Italy's capital in 1865, prompting redevelopment around Mercato Vecchio and Piazza della Repubblica. Rome replaced it six years later, leaving this contested redesign as part of the cityscape.
