San Lorenzo's building history
San Lorenzo developed slowly from Brunelleschi's early 15th-century plan into a Medici-funded church completed through later changes, additions and revisions.
Why go
The unfinished-looking history is useful when reading the church itself. Work began around 1419, but funding delays meant that only the sacristy advanced at first. The Medici took financial responsibility in 1442, while Brunelleschi died four years later. The church was completed in 1459, though chapels on the right aisle were still under construction decades afterward. Its variations are part of the building, not a mistake to overlook.
