For centuries, the Baptistery stood at the centre of Florentine religious identity, joining baptism, burial customs and public ritual around the city's patron saint.
Its octagonal plan becomes more meaningful when read through baptism: the number eight symbolised regeneration and the lantern directed light toward the font. The building also served as Florence's cathedral for a period and as the setting where generations of Florentines entered Christian life.
