The Florentine Republic

Florence's medieval and early modern republic was a guild-based commune governed through the Signoria before Medici rule eventually became hereditary.

The Florentine Republic

Why go

This is the political framework behind many of Florence's civic buildings and symbols. The republic formed after Matilda of Tuscany's death in 1115. Its Signoria was led by a gonfaloniere and drawn from guild-eligible citizens, but influential families shaped the system. Medici control began in 1434 and the republic ended when Alessandro de' Medici became duke in 1533.
