The Medici Chapels
Two chapels beside San Lorenzo use sculpture, coloured stone and dynastic tombs to express the Medici family's power across two centuries.
Why go
The chapels offer a concentrated view of Medici self-presentation. Michelangelo's New Sacristy was designed as a mausoleum for family members and includes tomb monuments with figures of the times of day. The later Cappella dei Principi takes a more courtly scale, using a high dome and rich materials. Together they show how a family's patronage shaped Florence's sacred architecture.
What to look for
Michelangelo's New Sacristy, begun as a Medici mausoleum in the 1520s.
Tomb monuments with Michelangelo's figures of the times of day.
The larger Cappella dei Principi, begun in the early 17th century.
