The Old Sacristy

Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy is a compact early Renaissance room where a square plan, dome and restrained colour create unusual clarity.

The Old Sacristy

Why go

Enter from San Lorenzo's left transept to see how much architecture Brunelleschi built from a small set of elements. The main room and altar space are both square, joined on a central axis beneath a dome. Grey pietra serena picks out the pilasters and arches against white walls. It also holds Medici tombs, linking this lesson in proportion to the family's patronage.
