Basilica della Santissima Annunziata
This active basilica layers Renaissance chapels and later Baroque decoration around one of Florence’s important Marian churches, directly facing the Spedale degli Innocenti.
Why go
The interior rewards slow chapel-by-chapel looking rather than a quick sweep. Works by Michelozzo, Andrea del Castagno, Perugino and Raffaellino del Garbo reveal how generations of Florentine patrons reshaped the church over centuries without erasing its earlier layers on site.
What to look for
Find Michelozzo and Pagno di Lapo Portigiani’s mid-15th-century Annunciation tabernacle.
Look for Andrea del Castagno’s Trinity and his Vision of Saint Julian in adjoining chapels.
Compare Perugino’s altarpiece panel with the Feroni Chapel’s 1692 Baroque decoration.
Useful to know
Check the official timetable before crossing the square.
Combine the basilica interior with an exterior study of the Spedale degli Innocenti opposite.
