Why go
This day brings together three different ways to look closely at Key West: a writer’s domestic setting, a living tropical habitat and a coastal fort. Begin with the rooms and grounds at the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Continue to Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, where patient observation is more rewarding than moving quickly through the planting. Finish at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, giving the fort a separate visit before spending time by the shore. The park receives the longest allowance, so the afternoon can unfold slowly. The conservatory’s glass enclosure does not guarantee a cool break. Check park access and beach conditions before deciding whether to enter the water.
