The French Way to Santiago
The Camino Francés begins at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, crosses the Pyrenees into Spain, and continues through historic cities to Santiago de Compostela.
Follow one of the best-known paths of the Way of St. James, with a clear change of landscape and culture from the Basque foothills to the cities of northern Spain. Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and Roncesvalles frame the mountain crossing; Pamplona, Burgos and León mark the long journey west. It is a pilgrimage measured in weeks, so the French starting point can also be a meaningful visit on its own.
Useful to know
Plan the Pyrenees crossing as part of a longer journey, with room for rest days; the full route is not a day walk.
If your time is short, focus on Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and the route's French starting context rather than treating Santiago as a nearby excursion.
