Gorges du Verdon

The Verdon cuts a deep limestone canyon in southeastern France, with rim viewpoints, a narrow gorge entrance and turquoise water toward Lac de Sainte-Croix. Pick a section rather than treating it as one stop.

Gorges du Verdon

Why go

This is a landscape to understand from more than one angle. Point Sublime looks toward the tight Couloir Samson, while the Route des Crêtes reveals the canyon from above; the water near Lac de Sainte-Croix gives a different sense of its scale. The contrast between pale limestone walls and the Verdon's green-blue water makes the geology immediately legible.

What to look for

  • Point Sublime looks down toward the narrow Couloir Samson.
  • The Route des Crêtes has successive belvédères above the canyon walls.
  • Toward Lac de Sainte-Croix, turquoise water contrasts with the limestone gorge.

Useful to know

  • Choose a rim-viewpoint outing or a water-focused outing first; the gorge spreads across roads, trails and lake access.
  • Check current route and activity conditions before committing to a trail, drive or water excursion.
