Bora Bora
Bora Bora brings a steep volcanic skyline into the same view as a lagoon and reef islets. Plan around the water, the main island or both, rather than treating it as one stop.

The contrast between Otemanu and the low reef islets gives Bora Bora its distinctive shape. Matira Beach offers a coastal focus, while Vaitape anchors the western side of the main island. There is a wartime layer too: the island served as an American Pacific support base under Operation Bobcat from 1942 to 1946.
What to look for
Otemanu and Pahia are the two peaks of the island’s extinct volcano.
Motu, the low islets along the coral reef, frame the lagoon.
Vaitape faces the main channel into the lagoon on the island’s western side.
Useful to know
Decide between a Matira Beach outing and a lagoon excursion before arranging transport; the main island and reef islets are separate destinations.
