Tahiti
Tahiti pairs Papeete’s urban setting with black sand coasts and a mountainous interior. The main island and the smaller Tahiti Iti peninsula offer different outings, so choose a geographic focus before setting out.

Tahiti rewards looking beyond an arrival point: Papeete, Papenoo and the peninsula show distinct sides of the island. Its two parts are Tahiti Nui in the northwest and Tahiti Iti in the southeast. The island was part of the Kingdom of Tahiti before French annexation in 1880, a useful backdrop to its role as the territory’s cultural and political center.
What to look for
Black sand beaches contrast with the coral reefs around Tahiti’s volcanic coast.
Papenoo draws attention inland to Tahiti’s mountainous landscape.
Tahiti Iti forms the smaller southeastern part of the island, beyond larger Tahiti Nui.
Useful to know
Build an outing around Papeete, Papenoo or Tahiti Iti rather than combining all three as if they were neighboring stops.
