Why go
The citrus displays explain why lemons became a public symbol of Menton, while performances in the old town place music amid its historic streets. Outside festival dates, Cocteau’s work in the town hall and port bastion offers a more flexible cultural visit.
The full story
The Lemon Festival is an annual themed celebration traditionally held in February. Citrus fruit covers large temporary displays in the central gardens, while bands and processions move through the streets. Menton also holds an annual classical music festival in its old town. Exact programs and dates change, so check the official event calendars before planning around either festival. Jean Cocteau forms a more permanent artistic thread: he spent time in Menton, painted the wedding room in the town hall and decorated the small bastion on the harbour wall. The town’s Cocteau museum adds another named point of interest, though exhibition access should be checked separately. For a different literary link, Spanish novelist Vicente Blasco Ibáñez lived at Fontana Rosa near the end of his life and shaped its garden. These connections are most useful as choices: a dated festival visit, a compact Cocteau walk, or a garden with a writer’s imprint.
