Why go
This context helps explain why names and speech around Menton do not fit one simple French or Italian label. Mentan and Mentone point to local and Italian usage, while scholars differ on how to classify Mentonasc. Local place names become more meaningful with this border context.
The full story
The origin of “Menton” is uncertain. One explanation connects it to the Roman name Mento; another proposes Mons Ottonis and a medieval Count of Ventimiglia. The likeness to the French word for “chin” does not establish an etymology. The town is Mentan in Mentonasc and Mentone in Italian. These variants are a reminder that Menton sits close to a language frontier. Mentonasc has been taught as a variety of Niçard, within the wider Occitan tradition, but linguistic descriptions have also placed it between Niçard and the Intemelio variety of Ligurian. Some scholars argue for a more clearly Ligurian base. That disagreement is worth keeping open rather than forcing the dialect into a single category. For a visitor, local spellings and names offer small signs of the contact between neighbouring speech communities.
