Why go
The ascent through old village lanes ends at a garden poised over the Mediterranean, combining built history with a broad coastal view. That vertical progression is the point of Èze: the village was fortified for its commanding position, and the garden makes that geography immediately legible to a visitor.
What to look for
- Follow the medieval lanes up through the hilltop village.
- Look out over the coast from the exotic garden at the summit.
- Notice how the village's height shaped its fortified form.
The full story
Èze's position above the Mediterranean has shaped its history as well as its appearance. The settlement came under the House of Savoy in the late fourteenth century, when its proximity to Nice made the hilltop valuable as a stronghold. The medieval village still expresses that defensive logic: narrow lanes climb toward the highest point, keeping the view of the sea as a final reveal. Later conflicts damaged its fortifications, but the elevated street pattern remains the main historical experience. Today the exotic garden crowns the climb. Its coastal outlook explains the village more directly than a list of rulers or dates: from here, the value of holding this height is plain. The church within the village offers another marker of how people occupied this exposed height over time.
Useful to know
- Wear shoes suited to a steep, old village rather than planning a flat promenade.
- Treat the summit garden as a separate stop and check its current entry arrangements before setting out.
