From the French Riviera World / Stories

Where the Name Côte d’Azur Came From

Côte d’Azur is a literary name for the coast, coined by Stéphen Liégeard in an 1887 book. Its imagery explains the name, but it does not settle the region’s borders.

Where the Name Côte d’Azur Came From

Why go

Liégeard adapted the name of his home department, Côte-d’Or, replacing its gold with the Mediterranean’s azure blue. That origin is useful when reading French maps and travel writing: Côte d’Azur is a cultural label, not an administrative unit with a fixed western limit. It can therefore cover different stretches of coast in different sources.
