Why go
The useful distinction is between exploring the settlement and moving between islands. Walking can cover Puerto Villamil itself, while a boat connection has its own departure point and sea conditions. Confirming those arrangements first helps protect the time you want for Isabela’s lagoons, beaches and other nearby outings.
The full story
Puerto Villamil’s small scale makes walking a practical way to orient yourself after arrival. That town-scale simplicity does not extend to the journey from Santa Cruz: the connection with Puerto Ayora is a sea crossing, and rough conditions can make it a demanding part of the day. Check the service and its departure arrangements directly before matching it to accommodation or an onward journey. For air travel, establish whether a flight actually operates on your intended date rather than assuming that an inter-island service will fit your plans. Once your arrival is settled, distinguish the village walk from excursions farther afield on Isabela. The tortoise breeding center, wetlands and Wall of Tears belong to separate outing decisions; the time needed to see the settlement does not describe the time needed for those landscapes.
Useful to know
- Verify the boat schedule and check-in arrangements before committing to a transfer day.
- Ask for directions to your accommodation before leaving the arrival point.
