Why go
The town makes several sides of Santa Cruz accessible from one base: the scientific work associated with the Charles Darwin Research Station, the walk to Tortuga Bay and excursions on the water. Distinguishing a land outing from a guided boat activity helps you leave enough time for the experience you value most.
The full story
Start by deciding whether your day centers on conservation, walking or time on the water. The Charles Darwin Research Station introduces the islands’ natural history and tortoise conservation. Its association with Lonesome George, the Pinta tortoise who died in 2012, gives the conservation work a particularly tangible history; do not plan on seeing the living animal. Tortuga Bay lies beyond the western side of town and involves a walk before you reach the beach. It therefore needs a different plan from a short waterfront stop. Las Grietas and bay excursions add other possibilities, but check their current access arrangements separately. Diving requires its own operator and activity plan rather than an assumption that any bay excursion includes it. Before leaving Puerto Ayora, confirm payment methods and carry suitable cash for transport and small purchases instead of relying on a particular bank or machine.
Useful to know
- Check current visitor arrangements for the Darwin station and Tortuga Bay.
- Confirm what a boat or diving excursion includes before combining it with a land outing.
