From the Ghent World / Stories

Gentse Feesten

Gentse Feesten turns central Ghent into a broad mix of music, theatre and street performance. Its scale suits visitors who enjoy moving between events and lively public spaces.

Gentse Feesten

Why go

What began as a city celebration in 1843 was reshaped around a stage near St Jacob's Church by Walter De Buck and fellow organizers in 1969. Its later spread through the inner city means the experience is not one venue or genre: street acts, theatre and music all contribute to the festival's character.

Useful to know

  • Consult the current programme and venue map before choosing an evening; the mix of stages and side events changes each edition.
  • Expect the inner city to feel different from an ordinary sightseeing day during the festival, and leave room to walk between performances.
