Getting to and around Ghent

Ghent is straightforward to reach by rail or road, but its historic centre is best explored on foot. Gent-Sint-Pieters and Gent-Dampoort serve different approaches, so check which station suits your first stop.

Why go

Use Gent-Sint-Pieters for the broadest range of rail connections, then take local transport toward the centre if you do not want a longer walk. Gent-Dampoort may be handier for an arrival from the Antwerp direction. Once among the central squares and canals, walking lets you link sights that sit close together.

Useful to know

  • Check your train’s Ghent station before booking the next leg; Gent-Sint-Pieters and Gent-Dampoort are separate arrival points.
  • From Gent-Sint-Pieters, allow for a walk of roughly half an hour to the centre or check a current De Lijn tram connection.
  • If cycling across the centre, watch for cobblestones and tram rails; check the current street signs before riding against one-way traffic.
