Boekentoren
Ghent University's Boekentoren adds a Modernist book tower to a skyline better known for medieval spires. Its architecture is visible from outside, while the rooftop panorama needs special access.
Henry van de Velde's concrete library makes a striking comparison with Ghent's church towers: this one was built for books. The reading spaces, courtyard and strong horizontal lines explain the design at ground level. A guided Belvedere visit offers the elevated view, but the tower is worthwhile as an architectural stop even without it.
What to look for
Van de Velde's concrete tower is a Modernist counterpart to Ghent's medieval skyline.
Reading rooms and the courtyard set horizontal spaces against the tower's vertical form.
The rooftop bronze fox terrier needs arranged access; enjoy the tower’s concrete silhouette from public streets.
Useful to know
Check the university library calendar before visiting public areas; access varies with the academic year.
Arrange a guided visit or relevant event if the Belvedere panorama is your aim; it is not part of a self-guided visit.
