Why go
This is the old St Elizabeth beguinage, distinct from Ghent's other beguinages at Sint-Amandsberg and Our Lady Ter Hooyen. Walking between Burgstraat and Begijnhoflaan shows how a former community of religious laywomen became part of the city. The nearby Anglican, Orthodox and Protestant churches explain the later name Holy Corner and its continuing religious variety.
What to look for
- The public streets retain the scale of the former beguinage within today's neighbourhood.
- Several Christian churches sit close together in the area known as Holy Corner.
- Mosaics mark the Orthodox church facade.
Useful to know
- Walk the public streets between Burgstraat and Begijnhoflaan; church interiors have separate access arrangements.
- Keep the Old St Elizabeth site distinct from the new St Elizabeth beguinage in Sint-Amandsberg.
