St Nicholas' Church
At Korenmarkt, St Nicholas' Church is an easy stop for understanding Ghent's medieval trading centre and its famous line of towers. The exterior and interior each tell a different part of that story.
Bluish Tournai stone, slender corner turrets and the tower above the crossing make this a clear example of local Scheldt Gothic building. Its position by the former market explains the guild chapels added along the sides. Inside, the Cavaillé-Coll organ adds a later artistic layer to a church rooted in merchant Ghent.
What to look for
Bluish Tournai stone and corner turrets give the church its Scheldt Gothic character.
The tower rises above the crossing rather than from the west front.
Guild chapels and the Cavaillé-Coll organ connect trade history with later craftsmanship.
Useful to know
Start on Korenmarkt to see how the church sits in Ghent's old commercial centre.
Pair it with the nearby Belfry and St Bavo's Cathedral to compare the three central towers.
