Why go
Start by deciding which landscape matters most. The oceanfront runs south from Main Beach through Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach towards Coolangatta, with distinct beach stops along the way. The Nerang River and residential waterways sit behind the shore, while Lamington National Park lies inland. That layout explains why a short coastal stay and a hinterland excursion need different plans.
The full story
The city grew from several settlements rather than one original resort centre. Southport was surveyed in 1875 and became a holiday destination for visitors from Brisbane. Surfers Paradise later helped turn the coastal strip into a larger tourism centre, and development spread across the beach suburbs. The result is a long city with several useful centres: Southport and Surfers Paradise are urban anchors, while Coolangatta sits at the southern state border. Behind the towers and beaches, canals occupy former wetland areas connected to the Nerang River. Farther west, the landscape rises into the rainforest hinterland. Looking at those layers makes a Gold Coast itinerary easier to shape: the shore is suited to linked beach stops, the waterways to a different view of the city, and the mountains to their own trip.
