Why go
A canal walk explains one side of Gothenburg; Haga’s wooden streets and the cultural buildings around Götaplatsen reveal others. This overview helps you choose between them before adding more distant stops. The city rewards a mix of built history and outdoor space rather than a checklist of monuments.
The full story
Gothenburg was founded by royal charter in 1621 at the mouth of the Göta älv. That position gave Sweden a westward maritime gateway and made trade central to the city’s development. The canals belong to this planned trading city, while the port explains why the river remains such an important point of orientation. Manufacturing added another layer. Volvo was founded here in 1927, and shipbuilding helped shape the city’s waterfront and identity. The University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology bring a further strand to this industrial background: Gothenburg is also a university city. Keep those layers in mind as you move between the centre, the river and the cultural institutions. They explain why a visit can shift from commercial stone buildings to working waterfronts, concert halls and large green spaces.
