Why go
Around Götaplatsen, the art museum, theatre and concert hall give culture a clear place in the city’s layout. Near Korsvägen, Universeum and the Museum of World Culture open up different subjects. Haga offers a less formal contrast through its wooden streets and the oversized cinnamon roll associated with the district.
The full story
Merchant and industrial wealth helped establish Gothenburg’s cultural and educational institutions. Donations supported museums such as Röhsska, while William Chalmers’s fortune helped create the institution that became Chalmers University of Technology. Together with the University of Gothenburg, it adds a student dimension to the city’s maritime and manufacturing background. Music is another thread. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra represents the classical tradition, while groups and musicians associated with the city include the Spotnicks, Ace of Base, José González and Little Dragon. Håkan Hellström’s songs draw on named places in Gothenburg, connecting popular music with the city’s streets. Avenyn links the older centre with the cultural buildings at Götaplatsen. That concentration makes the square a useful place to understand how art, theatre and concert music became part of Gothenburg’s public identity.
