Why go
Humanities collections, cultural studies and the KvinnSam gender research library give this branch a distinct purpose within the university system. Reading and study spaces are the everyday experience. If rare books or specialist holdings are your reason to visit, arrange access separately rather than expecting a display of the collections.
What to look for
- KvinnSam focuses on gender research.
- Reading and study spaces occupy the Renströmsgatan branch.
The full story
The university library grew from collections assembled for Gothenburg’s museum in the nineteenth century. Donated books formed an early foundation, and the library later merged with the collections of the newly established Gothenburg Institute. That shared history explains why older references can blur the distinctions between museum, city and university libraries. The move to Renströmsgatan in 1954 belongs to a later stage in that development. The premises incorporated foundations from the Memorial Hall of Gothenburg’s 1923 jubilee exhibition alongside a new part designed by Ärland Noreen. The site therefore connects the city’s exhibition history with its academic life. This is the Humanities Library branch, rather than the whole university library system or the public City Library at Götaplatsen. Keeping those institutions distinct helps you choose the right destination for reading, research or a particular collection.
