Skansen Lejonet

Skansen Lejonet is the lion-topped defensive tower on Gullberget, east of the centre. Its exterior offers a direct encounter with the city’s seventeenth-century fortifications.

Why go

The compact tower shows how Gothenburg defended the landward approaches as well as the harbour. It is distinct from Skansen Kronan, with a different hilltop and a lion rather than a crown above the roof. The setting among modern transport routes makes the surviving fortification particularly noticeable in the present city.

What to look for

  • The lion above the tower roof
  • The seventeenth-century defensive walls

Useful to know

  • Check the current approach route; the surrounding transport area changes during construction.
