Beyond Hiking in the Smokies
Fishing, cycling, and horseback riding offer different ways to experience the park's streams and valleys. Each has its own access limits, so choose the activity before choosing the area.
Why go
Park streams include native brook trout alongside introduced brown and rainbow trout, making fishing a distinctive way to spend time by the water. Cades Cove is associated with cycling as well as sightseeing, while riding uses designated trails. These activities shift the focus from reaching a summit to paying attention to the park's valleys and waterways.
Useful to know
Check current park fishing regulations before bringing tackle; rules protect native fish and streams.
Confirm where cycling or horseback riding is permitted before planning a route.
Keep a valley activity separate from a long mountain hike unless you have ample time.
