Choosing a Smokies Hike

Smokies hikes range from short waterfall walks to strenuous summit climbs and multi-day Appalachian Trail trips. Match the route to elevation gain and conditions, not distance alone.

Choosing a Smokies Hike

Why go

Alum Cave Trail climbs toward Mount Le Conte past Arch Rock and the Alum Cave Bluffs, offering a substantial mountain outing. Chimney Tops is shorter but steep. The Appalachian Trail serves a different goal: walking the high spine of the park. If your time or energy is limited, a short destination walk can still reveal the terrain without committing to a summit.

Useful to know

  • Choose Alum Cave Trail for a long climb with named rock features, or Chimney Tops for a shorter but strenuous ascent.
  • Check current trail status and weather before a summit hike; high-elevation conditions can differ from the trailhead.
  • For backpacking, confirm current campsite, shelter, and permit rules with the park before planning stages.
