Getting There and Around
A car makes it simplest to reach widely separated park areas. Newfound Gap Road links Gatlinburg and Cherokee, while other entrances serve different valleys and trailheads.
Why go
Your entrance determines what kind of day is realistic. Gatlinburg and Cherokee frame the cross-mountain drive; Townsend, Bryson City, and other surrounding towns lead toward different park areas. Long walks, including the Appalachian Trail, can replace driving for a planned hiking trip, but they do not make distant road-access areas close together.
Useful to know
Choose your park area before picking an entrance town, then allow time for mountain roads.
Check the park's current road conditions; weather and seasonal restrictions can change access.
If using a large vehicle, check road restrictions for the exact route.
