Getting to Know the Smokies
Start with the park's two sides: Gatlinburg in Tennessee and Cherokee in North Carolina. Newfound Gap Road connects them across a mountain landscape that rewards both short stops and longer walks.
Why go
The park is easier to understand as a ridge and its surrounding valleys than as a single attraction. The Tennessee–North Carolina line runs through it, and the Appalachian Trail follows its high country. Newfound Gap Road gives a useful first crossing; from there, choose a valley, overlook, or trail that fits your time and the day's conditions.
Useful to know
Use Gatlinburg or Cherokee as an orientation point for the Newfound Gap Road crossing.
If you have limited time, choose one road corridor or trail area before setting out.
