Seasons and Mountain Weather
Weather in the Smokies changes sharply with elevation. A mild valley forecast can mean cold, wet conditions on the ridges, so the season alone cannot tell you what a high trail will feel like.
Why go
Spring can shift quickly from sun to snow at higher elevations. Summer brings heat and humidity low down, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms; the high country is generally cooler. Autumn brings cooler days and fall color, while winter can leave valleys mild and mountain roads or trails snowy. These contrasts help you choose between a valley visit and a ridge walk.
Useful to know
Compare the forecast for your trail's elevation with the forecast for the entrance town.
Carry a layer and rain protection when a day includes both low valleys and high ridges.
Check current road and trail conditions before a winter or early spring mountain crossing.
