Visitor Information and Safety

Sugarlands and Oconaluftee are useful orientation points on opposite sides of the park. Before heading farther in, plan for limited services and give bears, streams, and waterfalls space.

Visitor Information and Safety

Why go

Sugarlands near Gatlinburg and Oconaluftee near Cherokee can help you choose a trail or road for the day's conditions. Once away from those entry areas, the park is a mountain landscape: bears may enter developed areas, streams can stay cold, and slick rock around waterfalls can be dangerous. A little preparation changes both comfort and safety.

Useful to know

  • Get current trail and road advice at Sugarlands or Oconaluftee before a longer outing.
  • Fuel up in a surrounding town before driving deep into the park.
  • Keep food secured, stay back from wildlife, and avoid climbing on waterfall rocks.
