From the Great Smoky Mountains World / Stories

Where to Begin in the Park

Start with a corridor that matches your interest: Newfound Gap Road for mountain views, Cades Cove for a historic valley, or the Oconaluftee area for a North Carolina entry.

Where to Begin in the Park

Why go

Newfound Gap Road crosses the park between Gatlinburg and Cherokee and reaches overlooks and trailheads near the state line. Cades Cove offers a different day among preserved cabins, barns, and churches. The Oconaluftee area has the Mountain Farm Museum and Mingus Mill nearby. These anchors help turn a large park into a manageable visit rather than a list of disconnected stops.

Useful to know

  • For a first mountain crossing, use Newfound Gap Road and select a few overlooks or trails along that corridor.
  • Give Cades Cove its own block of time if historic buildings are your priority.
  • Check current access to trails and roads before committing to a route.
