From the Great Smoky Mountains World / Places
Alum Cave Bluffs
Hike 4.6 miles round trip to a towering rock overhang on Alum Cave Trail. The walk combines stream crossings, forest, stone steps and a dramatic turnaround point.
Why go
Alum Cave Bluffs is a towering rock overhang rather than a true cave. The 4.6-mile round trip follows streams and forest before reaching the dramatic wall, making the hike rewarding even without continuing toward Mount LeConte. In cold weather, ice can form above the trail and fall from the overhang; assess conditions before going beneath it.
What to look for
A dramatic rocky overhang along Alum Cave Trail.
Useful to know
Start at Alum Cave Trailhead on Newfound Gap Road; use the bluffs as a 4.6-mile round-trip turnaround.
Watch for falling ice at the overhang in cold weather.
