John Ownby Cabin

Walk Fighting Creek Nature Trail from Sugarlands to a preserved nineteenth-century cabin. The round trip is roughly 1.4 miles through woodland.

John Ownby Cabin

Why go

The Fighting Creek walk from Sugarlands ends at a surviving home of the former Sugarlands community. Look closely at the hand-hewn white pine and tulip-poplar logs and the dovetail joints holding them together. The building adds a concrete human story to a short woodland outing and pairs well with the visitor center’s exhibits before or after the trail.

What to look for

  • A historic log cabin built in the 1860s by John Ownby.

Useful to know

  • Start behind Sugarlands Visitor Center on Fighting Creek Nature Trail; the cabin walk is about 1.4 miles round trip.
