Why go
Newfound Gap gives a broad high-elevation panorama where Newfound Gap Road crosses the Tennessee–North Carolina line. The Appalachian Trail crossing adds context to a daytime stop, while the large parking area also makes stationary sky viewing possible after dark. Tennessee tourism specifically recommends the gap for stargazing. At about 5,046 feet, cloud, wind and cold can differ sharply from either park entrance.
